Getting a feel for my "turnouts" after a fitting in Seattle last week.

I’m packing up and heading out this afternoon for Richland. Come tomorrow morning, I’ll be a participant in the “Fire Ops 101” event at the Hammer Training and Education Center.

Sponsored by the Washington State Council of Fire Fighters, the event consists of a full-day, hands-on workshop where media representatives and elected officials participate directly in a number of different scenarios designed to give participants a better appreciation of what Fire and EMS personnel do on a daily basis.

I’ve heard that vehicle extraction and a long ladder-climb are just two of the exercises I’ll be experiencing, but I’ll be more confident knowing I have a trained firefighter shadowing me at all times.

My official SFD duffel - full of an assortment of heavy gear I'll wear tomorrow.
